Juliette
Juliette blinked once, then twice. There was no way she heard him correctly. Did he say...did he say he wanted to stop? To walk her to her car?
Why?
What had she done wrong?
Suddenly, her face heated with shame and she ripped herself away from him. She nearly stumbled over her feet but she managed to use her hand to catch one of the open lockers with her palm in order to right herself. Because the lockers were sleek and made with wood, there was no loud noise that permeated the quiet room, nothing that would make her shoulders jump.
She took one breath, then another, before she dropped her hand at her side. Her eyes went everywhere but at Connor - the floor, the big Mayhem name scrawled along the floor, the walls. Anywhere but into his eyes. She didnât want him to know how bothered she was by this. She didnât want him to see just how upset she was.
Because she shouldnât be. She should be grateful that he stopped things before they got too far. Because she knew she wouldnât have stopped. She wanted to feel him, to taste him, to touch him. She wanted to remember what it was like to do all of those things because she couldnât for the life remember, and it was important that she experienced being with him this way just once.
That was all she wanted. She wasnât trying to be selfish. She didnât want everything. Just one time with Connor, and then she could quit him.
But he ruined it.
Now, shame crept through her body, pinching her cheeks, warming her body so she was flushed with it. She hated this, hated herself.
âJuliette, I -â
Connorâs voice came out like nails on a chalkboard. He was the last person she wanted to hear right now. In fact, she wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. And his little words of appeasement, if that charm and that impish smile, weâre not things she wanted to see right now. She was in no mood to be played. She was in no mood to be toyed with. Maybe he could get away with those things with the other girls he had been with, but she didnât want to deal with it when it came to herself. She was better than that.
âNo.â The word came out of her low and deep. She didnât think she had ever heard it sound that way before, and it shook her to her core. She hoped that didnât show on her face, however. She didnât want him to see anything she was feeling right now. She didnât want his sympathy, even if it was encased in beautiful blue eyes. âDonât.â
âJuliette -â
She took a step back and nearly hit the lockers behind her. âWhat?â she asked. Her brow furrowed deeply over her eyes to the point where she could see her eyebrows from her peripheral if she really wanted to look. If she held it that way, she knew sheâd get a headache soon, but she didnât actually care.
